I once read that if you are going to Vienna for Christmas, and you only have time for one Christmas market, then you better visit the Christmas Market at Spittelberg. I am not sure if I completely agree or not, but the market at Spittelberg is for sure located among the top 3 Christmas Markets in Vienna.
The special thing about the Christmas Market at Spittelberg is that it is not like any of the other markets. This is not located at one big square, but it is made up of lots of small shops in small streets in the area between the Volkstheater and the Mariahilferstrasse. Due to this, it has a great atmosphere and it is a thrill to check this one out after some time in Schönbrunn or at the Rathauzplats Christmas Market.
At this market you can find mostly the same products as elsewhere, but besides the normal products you can also find bioshops selling “adventtee”, meaning a box of 24 filters, one for every day in December.
We truly loved this Christmas Market, and we will for sure recommend everyone in Vienna to check out this pearl not far from the inner centre of Vienna.
Some people say that the Christmas Market at Schönbrunn is the best in Vienna. We do not agree totally, but that does not mean that we do not like this Christmas market. It is beautiful, in beautiful surroundings, and what we like about it is that there is more space to walk and to relax than at the market at Rathausplatz.
There are not to many “shops” at the Schönbrunn Christmas Market, but still enough to spend some hours here while drinking some hot wine and eating some hot food. There are different programs going on throughout the different days before Christmas, and the visitors can also enjoy a beautiful view of the Schönbrunn with the giant Christmas tree in the evenings!
The Christmas Market at Rathausplatz is probably the most famous, and the most popular market in Vienna. During evenings it is so packed, that you can hardly move because of the crowd. The lights are magnificent on the Rathaus, and they have very nice “Christmas Market cups.” You haven’t been to Vienna if you haven’t seen this!
At this Christmas Market you can buy mostly anything, and one of the special things with this market is that you also can use the “Christmas Market train” to see the entire area. The decorations are beautiful, and this has a wonderful Christmas atmosphere.
You can read more about Belvedere at our Belvedere page, but you can only imagine what a Christmas market is like at such a beautiful place! The Christmas Market at Belvedere is located at the area behind the upper palace, and here you have a stage for daily performances, quite some shops, a small train for the children and food stands and other stands where you can buy whatever you’d like like Christmas decorations, handmade things and other nice stuff.
The Christmas market at Belvedere is also one of those you can easily miss out on, and it doesn’t really matter to much, but still we like it a lot.
The Christmas Market at Karlsplatz is a nice one, with great toilet facilities (quite seldom thing) and place where you can big crepes, gluhwein, clothes and other nice things. There is also an area for children to play on, and yet another Christmas Market with great atmosphere. The special thing is that in many other cities this would be a major attraction, but due to the fact that Vienna has so many wonderful Christmas markets, this is one of those you can sort of miss out on, without loosing anything.
Still, if you want to check out as many Christmas Markets as possible, make sure not to forget about this one! And, if you are first at Karlsplatz you better check out the beautiful Karlskirche as well!
The Christmas Market at Maria Theresien Platz is probably not the most important market to visit while in Vienna before Christmas, but it is nice and cosy, and it has a great atmosphere as well. The location is great, just between the Museum of Fine Arts and the Museum of Natural History. You can of course buy your own Christmas market cup here as well, you can drink hot wine, and you can buy handmade stuff, fruits covered with chocolate, and all kinds of typical Christmas market products.
