Which is the best five star hotel in Vienna?

Are you planning a trip to Vienna? Are you looking for a five star hotel in Vienna, and the goal is to reside in the best of the best? Here we will tell you which of the five star hotels in Vienna we believe to be the best!

There are almost 30 five star hotels in Vienna, making it hard for a common traveler to make a decision. 30 five star hotels is quite a lot compared to most other European cities, so only a few cities have more five star hotels than Vienna (for example London and Prague).

Vienna is a beautiful and majestic city, so as you come to town you will find really impressive buildings on every corner, and quite some of these buildings are nice hotels. That is why several of the five star hotels in Vienna look really nice on the outside, and in general the inside follows the same style. However, the question is still… which is the best five star hotel in Vienna?

The best five star hotels in Vienna

It is no final answer that will satisfy everyone to this question, but here we will describe two hotels that we believe to be the best, and then two runners up which just as well could have been said to be the best in Vienna.

Almost the best in Vienna

Palais Hansen Kempinski Vienna

This is by many people said to be the best of the best in Vienna. We totally agree, except that in our eyes this hotel is located a bit to much outside the inner center. It is not a long walk at all, but still, a bit to far away. But, if you dont mind using public transportation, trams or so on, then this is perfect with luxury on every corner, both on the inside and the outside.

Hotel Sans Souci Wien

This is almost a brand new five star hotel in Vienna. It was built in 2012, and it is a really impressive building. The hotel is located outside the ring, but still very close to the famous Museumsquartier in Vienna. The hotel has a separate ladies spa, free WiFi, and it is possible to park your car for 25 Euro per day in the hotel. This hotel has received lots of praise from visitors from all across the world, but still it does not reach the top of our list.

Best hotels in Vienna

Hotel Imperial

In a building from 1873 Hotel Imperial is located in the heart of Vienna, just along the Ringsstrasse. People who like fitness with view, will like the rooftop fitness centre inside the hotel. Inside the hotel you can eat traditional Austrian courses and cakes in the hotel restaurant and in the cafe. The hotel has a beautiful SPA area, offers free wireless Internet and if you will visit Musikverein for a concert, this hotel is just next to it!

Hotel Sacher

This might be the most famous of all hotels in Vienna, but luckily there is more to it than just being famous. The name is attached to quality, and it still is, and that is what makes it the best hotel in Vienna according to several travel portals such as Booking.com and TripAdvisor. This hotel is the most central of the four hotels mentioned in this article, and just walking out the entrance of the hotel you will be in the famous shopping street Karntner Strasse, and this hotel is also a close neighbor to the Opera in Vienna. And since you asked, of course you can eat the traditional Sacher cake in the hotel!

Conclusion

There are lots of nice five star hotels in Vienna, but some are of course better than others. If price has no influence, then the two last mentioned hotels are the ones with the best location and highest amount of luxury, but if you want the five star hotel to make a smaller impact on your VISA card, then the two five star hotels mentioned first in this article should be considered.

How can I get to Bratislava with bus from Vienna?

bus to BratislavaI will stay in Vienna for some days and then I will head on to Bratislava. How can I get there in an easy way with bus?

We recently received a similar question in the Bratislava Guide, so you can partly read the answer there. A very good solution is to use Eurolines and their coach service which will take you both from the center of Vienna and from Vienna Airport to three different stops in the center of Bratislava. It is quite reasonable prices for this service, so very easy to use and to enjoy!

For more information and prices, visit Eurolines.sk.

Where can I watch the opening ceremony online in German?

I am living in Amsterdam at the moment, but I would like to watch the opening ceremony in Sochi live online, with German/Austrian commentators. How can that be done? What Austrian channels will broadcast from the Olympics?

We had a very similar question not long ago, but this is still a bit different because you focus on the opening ceremony. What is for sure, is that ATV has the rights in Austria to broadcast from the opening ceremony (and the final ceremony). The rest of the events during the Olympics will be broadcasted by ORF, and hopefully everything will be available online.

Since you are located in Amsterdam you will need to trick the system a bit, meaning that you need an Austrian IP address to watch the event live on ATV.at. Find more out about how to do this at one of the following sites.

These links will for sure help you to find out exactly how to watch the opening ceremony and other events from the Winter Olympics live online. Good luck and enjoy!

How to get an Austrian IP address?

Hello! I am in need of an Austrian IP address to watch some special TV shows only available for people with Austrian IP address online. Can you give me any advice on how this can be arranged?

This is a very general problem and you are right in the fact that an Austrian IP address will solve the problem. As you might know lots of TV stations only allow people with a local IP address watch their live shows, football matches, Olympic Games and similar activities online, and in that case you need to trick them a bit, so that it will seem like you are in Austria watching the show, even though you are lying on the beach in Barcelona and enjoying the sun (or somewhere else).

To fix the problem you need to get connected to a computer/server in Austria somewhere through a VPN (Virtual Private Network) and thus all your traffic on the internet will seem to come from the server in Austria, and not from your actual location (which again might be on the beach in Barcelona or maybe in New York checking out the famous attractions there).

Once this connection is made you will surf the net with an Austrian IP address and to all websites it will seem as if you are in Austria. But, how can I get this connection? Where can I find such a server?

There are quite some solutions available online to this challenge, but one solution that we have tried ourselves and that we liked a lot was a program provided by HideMyAss. When you visit their homepage you can make a subscription for one month, 6 months or 12 months and the prices are not at all high. They have servers all around the world, which means they do not only provide an Austrian IP address, but similar addresses in the UK, in the USA, in Spain, Italy, Germany, Hungary, Norway and lots of other countries. When the subscription is made you can download their program which is small and easy to understand. Once downloaded you just enter your username and password and then you connect to the server in the country you would like to use. This means that if you start know you can surf the web with an Austrian IP address in 5-6 minutes from now, super easy!

At the moment you can then connect to a server in Klagenfurt in Austria, and once the connection is made you will have an Austria IP address. You might have to restart your web browser to make it work, but once this is made all sites on the net will look upon you as someone surfing the internet from Austria. Then you can also watch Austrian TV shows on the net only available to people in Austria. Another good thing is that with this VPN connection all your surfing on the net is encrypted, which means that none is able to steal information from you. This is a common problem using open WiFi connections around the world in cafes, hotels, restaurants and so on. But, once you connect with HideMyAss your connection is encrypted and you can safely surf the net wherever you are in the world.

What to see in Budapest?

I am going to Budapest next week on a day trip from Vienna, and I wonder: What should I see, what should I do?

The question does not really have anything to do with Vienna, but we will of course try to answer it as good as possible anyway. Budapest is a great city, and if you have 7-8 hours in the city we would for sure recommend some sort of a guided tour making it much easier to get the most out of your time in the Hungarian capital. There are jump on – jump off tours in Budapest and you can find them almost anywhere in the center. If you are more into a private guided tour in Budapest, then you should visit Budapest Guide. There are also many other private tour operators, so if you do a search on Google you will find many others as well.

Another piece of advice would be to read the article written by Budablogger named: Budapest best – best five of Budapest. The article is a bit long, but it contains some really good advices and the five favorites of the author. If we would write the article there would probably be some changes, we would for example add the area around Fishermen’s Bastion and the Matthias Church and maybe the St. Stephen’s Basilica and the Heroes Square, but all in all the article is really interesting and contains some really good advices. What is for sure is that the area around the City Park is great, and even though it doesn’t look the best on first impression, it still is a wonderful area with lots of great activities and cool things to do. If you want a beautiful picture/panorama, take a walk along the Danube.

If you are on a budget in Budapest then you can also walk along the Danube on the Buda and the Pest side, especially wonderful after sunset. If you travel with tram 2 along the Danube on the pest side you can see a whole lot for the price of a public transportation ticket.

These advices will hopefully help you a bit, and then the given links can give you the information missing from this page.

Is Vienna an expensive city?

I am travelling on budget throughout Europe and I wonder if Vienna is an expensive city to stay in?

Vienna is not at all a very expensive city, but it all depends on what cities you compare it with. When it comes to accomodation it feels fairly expensive, at least if you compare it with Budapest, Prague, Bratislava and similar beautiful cities located in the former Eastern Europe. Still, if you are willing to go for a hostel, you can still end up living at places for less than 20 Euro per night. Then you need to be willing to live a bit outside the city center, but if you use the metro and public transportation in Vienna, that is no problem.

For those on cheap holidays it is also good to know that the transportation prices in Vienna are quite average. A day pass to the public transportation only costs around 6 Euro, making it no worse than anywhere else… just about average. In fact public transportation prices are very similar in Vienna to earlier mentioned cities such as Prague and Budapest.

When you go out to eat you can find very exclusive places in Vienna, but if you want to dine on budget, you can eat a kebab somewhere on the street costing about 4 Euro. A meal in McDonalds cost around 6 Euro, so you should probably calculate 5-6 Euro per budget meal at least. Some restaurants in centers have lunch offers with several courses, and these normally cost somewhere around 10 Euro. If you have more money a nicer meal in a good Vienna restaurant will normally cost 20-25 Euro, including drinks and 2-3 courses.

If you want to go shopping in H&M, Zara or other fashion stores, the prices are just like everywhere else. So, it is not at all cheaper, and not more expensive. This means that shopping in these stores will cost you just as much if you do it in Budapest, Vienna, Munich, Oslo or Barcelona. The exclusive shops also have general prices, making them just as expensive in Vienna as elsewhere in the world.

How to get to Gasometer?

How can I get from the centre of Vienna, like Stephansplatz, to Gasometer?

If you come with car you need to travel on highway (Autobahn) A23 Südosttangente and take the exit towards “St. Marx”… but, since you wanted to know how to get from the center of Vienna, you can travel with the U3 towards Simmering, but make sure to leave the metro at the station Gasometer. This line stops at the Stephansplatz, making the travel very easy. If the concert at Gasometer lasts for a long time you might need to use night bus line N75 to get back to the center.
